Australian Desserts: Pavlova, Anzac Biscuit, Lamington, Frog Cake, Icebox Cake, Neenish Tart, White Christmas $8.16 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: ANZAC Biscuits are a sweet biscuit popular in Australia and New Zealand, made using rolled oats, flour, coconut, sugar, butter, golden syrup, bicarbonate of soda and boiling water. Anzac biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) established in World War I. It has been claimed the biscuits were sent by wives to soldiers abroad because the ingredients do not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation. Today, ANZAC Biscuits are manufactured commercially for retail sale and are popular in Australia and New Zealand. Biscuits issued to soldiers by the Army referred to as “Anzac tiles” or “Anzac wafers” differ from the popular Anzac biscuit. Anzac tiles and wafers were hard tack, a bread substitute, which had a long shelf life and was very hard. There are a number of theories surrounding the true origins of Anzac biscuits, but what is certain is that they came about during WWI, around 191415. While some believe the biscuits were first made by the troops in the trenches with provisions they had at hand to relieve the boredom of their battle rations, the most widely accepted belief is that the biscuits were created by Australian and New Zealand women endeavouring to create a treat for their loved ones that would survive the long journey to the front. It has also been suggested that the biscuit is a variation of Scottish oat cakes, resulting from the Scottish influence in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. In a speech to the East Otago Federation of Womens Institutes, Professor Helen Leach, of the Archaeology Department of the University of Otago in New Zealand, stated that the first published use of the name Anzac in a recipe was in an advertisement in the 7th edition of St Andrew’… More: |

Excerpt: Anne Jemima Clough (20 January 1820 27 February 1892) was an early English suffragist and a promoter of higher education for women.Clough was born at Liverpool , the daughter of a cotton merchant. She was the sister of Arthur Hugh Clough , the poet and assistant to Florence Nightingale . When two years old she was taken with the rest of the family to Charleston, South Carolina . It was not till 1836 that she returned to England, and though her ambition was to write, she was occupied for the most part in teaching. Her father’s failure in business led her to open a school in 1841. This was carried on until 1846. In 1852, after making some technical studies in London and working at the Borough Road and the Home and Colonial schools, she opened another small school of her own at Ambleside in Westmorland . Giving this up some ten years later, she lived for a time with the widow of her brother Arthur Hugh Cloughwho had died in 1861 in order that she might educate his children. (The youngest daughter, Blanche Athena, subsequently devoted her life to helping her aunt .) Keenly interested in the education of women , she made friends with Emily Davies , Barbara Bodichon , Frances Buss and others. After helping to found the North of England council for promoting the higher education of women , she acted as its secretary from 1867 to 1870 and as its president from 1873 to 1874.When it was decided to open a house for the residence of women students at Cambridge University , Clough was |

Out of Women’s Experience $21.95 This innovative book proposes a new model for comprehensive and effective leadership, drawn from the personal experiences and accounts of female educational leaders. The authors demonstrate how women conceptualize and practice their educational leadership roles in ways that differ significantly from most of their male counterparts. In redefining these differences as ‘relational leadership’, Regan and Brooks suggest that the attributes and skills that women bring to leadership are accessible and valuable to female and male school leaders alike. |

Rites Of Passage In Postcolonial Women’s Writing. $75.28 This volume brings a variety of new approaches and contexts to modern and contemporary women’s writing. Contributors include both new and well-established scholars from Europe, Australia, the USA, and the Caribbean. Their essays draw on, adapt, and challenge anthropological perspectives on rites of passage derived from the work of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner. Collectively, the essays suggest that women’s writing and women’s experiences from diverse cultures go beyond any straightforward notion of a threefold structure of separation, transition, and incorporation. Some essays include discussion of traditional rites of passage such as birth, motherhood, marriage, death, and bereavement; others are interested in exploring less traditional, more fluid, and/or problematic rites such as abortion, living with HIV/AIDS, and coming into political consciousness. Contributors seek ways of linking writing on rites of passage to feminist, postcolonial, and psychoanalytic theories which foreground margins, borders, and the outsider. The three opening essays explore the work of the Zimbabwean writer Yvonne Vera, whose groundbreaking work explored taboo subjects such as infanticide and incest. A wide range of other essays focus on writers from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe, including Jean Rhys, Bharati Mukherjee, Arundhati Roy, Jean Arasanayagam, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, and Eva Sallis. Rites of Passage in Postcolonial Women’s Writing will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of postcolonial and modern and contemporary women’s writing, and to students on literature and women’s studies courses who want to study women’s writing from a cross-cultural perspective and from different theoretical positions.Contributors: Lizzy Attree, Lopamudra Basu, Katrin Berndt, Gay Breyley, Helen Cousins, Tanya Dalziell, Alexandra Dumitrescu, Anna Gething, Jessica Gildersleeve, Sharanya Jayawickrama, Kimberley M. Shapers of the Great Debate on Women’s Rights $75 The three waves of feminism are explored through the lives of the women who made history in bringing women’s issues to the forefront of American society. Many early feminists supported not only women’s rights, but also rights of slaves and contributed to the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment, granting emancipation to slaves. They continued to work towards women’s suffrage and were hopeful the Fourteenth Amendment would provide universal suffrage. However, women were not granted suffrage until the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment, nearly fifty years later. It was women’s fundamental need for independence and an identity of their own, separate from that of men, which thrust the women’s movement forward and continues to propel it today. Many notable women, such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Billie Jean King, Betty Friedan, Helen Gurley Brown, Jane Fonda, and Sandra Day O’Connor, are included in this history of the women’s movement in America. The biographical entries cite works for further reading, and the volume closes with a bibliography. The Shapers of the Great Debate series takes a biographical approach to history, following the premise that people make history in the circumstances in which they find themselves. Each volume in this series examines the lives and experiences of the individuals involved in a particular debate through both major and minor biographies. |
