''Through the looking-glass'': Magical and misused objects in nineteenth century children's literature.

”Through the looking-glass”: Magical and misused objects in nineteenth century children’s literature.

$49.99

This thesis uses stories from St. Nicholas magazine, between the years 1873 and 1905, to examine the representation and function of objects in 19th century, children’s fantasy literature. Objects play prominent roles in two dichotomous genres: Marchen (folktales and fairy tales) which first originated as an oral storytelling tradition for peasants and Nonsense stories (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland , for example), which emerged after America and England’s Industrial Revolutions to entertain children of the new middle class. Both genres developed as a means to empower their audiences.;Marchen stories create a world in which magic already exists. The protagonists gain access to magic objects which allow their individual ascents to power. These magic objects demonstrate enhanced functions. Besides performing their first function, they also perform a magic function. Seven league boots, for example, cushion and protect feet, but also allow the hero to walk seven leagues in a single stride. Magic objects let the hero cheat. He is unbeatable with a Sword of Potency or a Necklace of Strength. He will vanquish the villain, win the princess, and become king. He uses the objects to achieve a change in status and wealth.;Nonsense stories create alternate realities. Protagonists are children who get lured from their world into an alternate realm. They must find their way back home by learning the rules of the new world and how to use its objects. Nonsense objects are juxtaposed, transformed, appropriated, or vivified. Juxtaposition forms relationships between two unrelated objects. Transformation changes objects’ materiality. Appropriation finds new uses for objects. Vivification brings objects to life. The children experience cognitive dissonance when interacting with misused objects. Objects both hinder and help children’s journey, but ultimately mediate the children’s identity quest. Child protagonists leave the alternate world more confident in themselves and their

Excerpt: Melmoth the Wanderer is a gothic novel published in 1820, written by Charles Robert Maturin (uncle of Jane Wilde who was mother of Oscar Wilde ).Synopsis The central character, Melmoth (a Wandering Jew type), is a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for 150 extra years of life and spends that time searching for someone who will take over the pact for him. The novel actually takes place in the present, but this back story is revealed through several nested stories-within-a-story that work backwards through time (usually through the Gothic trope of old books).Reception The novel was cited by Karl Edward Wagner as one of the thirteen best supernatural horror novels , and by H. P. Lovecraft as “an enormous stride in the evolution of the horror-tale”. . The

50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD Hollow Body Electric Guitar (Antique Faded Cherry)

50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD Hollow Body Electric Guitar (Antique Faded Cherry)

$3999

Back in the late 1950s, Gibson was boldly pushing the envelope on electric guitar design. The effort resulted in several models that were just too far ahead of their time to sink in with players of the daythe Flying V and Explorer being cases in point and were gone from the catalogue by 1960. The ES-335 however was an instant classic, embraced by blues, rock, country and jazz players the world over. By 1960, this model was hitting its stride though it was certainly a year of transition for the iconic model. In the beginning of 1960, the ES-335TDs were built to the same specs as the 1959 versions and were offered in only Natural and Sunburst finishes. By about midyear, neck specs began to change to a thinner and more elliptical feel and ultimately, production of the Natural ES-335TD would cease and the Cherry finish would take its place in the latter part of the year. It is this later version that many argue the 1960 ES-335TDs features had settled into their optimum form. th a fast new neck profile, striking new insert or reflector tone and volume knobs, the ES-335TD still retained early-spec details such as the dot fingerboard inlays, a double cutaway profile, full-length maple centerblock, and nickel-plated hardware that players have long seen as indicative of the models zenith. All these and more are brought back to life in the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD, a reincarnation of one of the most legendary semi-hollow electric guitar of all time, handcrafted by Gibson Customs Memphis division to celebrate the models golden anniversary. For this celebration, Gibson Custom is offering the later 1960 fast neck profile version, the most unique of the year and all aged in Gibsons acclaimed VOS (Vintage Original Specs) process, and loaded with period-correct hardware including insert volume and tone knobs, double band tuners and a pair of accurate PAF-style 57 Classic humbucking pickups. The Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD is equipped with pickups an

AdaptAbility: How to Survive Change You Didn’t Ask For

$24.98

Learn the secrets to taking any change in stride. “Change is hard,” we say, and it is even harder when change is thrust upon us. In today’s tough times, we may be forced to reinvent our career or downsize our lives; at any point in life, we may lose a love or a dream. Our first reaction to change we didn’t ask for may be to rail against fate. But what if we could see past today’s turmoil and spot the opportunities that lie within unasked-for change? That is the promise of AdaptAbility, bestselling author and executive coach M. J. Ryan’s paradigm-shifting new book on not merely surviving but thriving when change is required. Why is it so hard to accept change? Paradoxically, it is for the very reason that our brains usually work so well; we are designed to learn something and make it automatic. The problem is that when circumstances change, our “efficient” brains keep trying to do things the same old way. In AdaptAbility, Ryan provides strategies to retrain your brain and optimize your response to change, step by step: by first accepting the new reality, then expanding your options, and finally, taking effective action. She offers cutting-edge tools for becoming calmer, less fearful, and more flexible, creative, and resourceful in your thinking. Best of all, as your “adapt-ability” increases, so does your confidence that you will be able to face whatever life sends your way and find new ways to flourish.M. J. Ryan, internationally recognized as a leading change expert, is one of the creators of the New York Times bestselling Random Acts of Kindness series and the author of This Year I Will . . . , The Happiness Makeover, The Power of Patience, Trusting Yourself, and Attitudes of Gratitude, among other books. A member of Professional Thinking Partners, she specializes in coaching individuals and teams around the world. She has

It’s a business trip that takes attorney Maddie Fitzgerald down to New Orleans, but it’s hardly business as usual when a man breaks into her hotel room and tries to kill her. Barely escaping with her life, the sexy, stylish thirty-two-year-old brunette calls the police and finds herself face-to-face with FBI agent Sam McCabe. Unnerved by his questions — and his good looks — Maddie is told she’s been targeted by a hired killer, one who has eluded McCabe for years. Apparently, she’s been mistaken for another woman, an FBI informant of the same name who was also staying at the hotel that night. McCabe grills her, and then disappears. Shaken, she finishes her business and returns home to St. Louis. But days later, Maddie is attacked a second time, and again McCabe returns to question her. He convinces her that the only way she’ll ever be safe again is if the killer is caught, and the quickest way to nab him is to use her as bait. Maddie reluctantly agrees, and sparks fly and then ignite as McCabe shadows her. But their unexpected romance throws McCabe off his stride — and puts Maddie in the hands of a killer.

Excerpt: Nii-lante Augustus Kwamlah Quaye, better known as Cab Kaye (London, September 3, 1921 Amsterdam, March 13, 2000) was an English-Ghanaian-Dutch jazz musician, bandleader, entertainer, drummer, guitarist, pianist, songwriter and singer. His singing was influenced by Billy Holiday and he often accompanied himself on piano with a graceful, rhythmic style. He effortlessly combined blues, bebop, stride and scat with the music of his African and Ghanaian musical heritage. Cab Kaye, also known as Cab Quay, Cab Quaye and Kwamlah Quaye, was born on St. Giles High Street in Camden, London to a musical family. Cabs mother, Doris Balderson, sang in English music halls. His Ghanaian great-grandfather was an asafo warrior drummer. His grandfather, Henry Quaye, was an organist for the Methodist Mission church in the former Gold Coast, now called Ghana. His father, Caleb Jonas Quaye (born 1895 in Accra, Ghana), performed under the name Ernest Mope Desmond as musician, band leader, pianist and percussionist. With his blues piano style, Caleb Jonas Quaye became popular around 1920 in London and Brighton with his band The Five Musical Dragons in Murrays Club with, among others, Arthur Briggs, Sidney Bechet and George “Bobo” Hines. Cab Kaye would never know his father. On January 27, 1922, on his way to performing in a concert, Caleb Jonas Quaye lost his life in a railroad accident in Blisworth, Northamptonshire. Cab was four months old. Cab, his mother and sister Norma moved to Portsmouth, where a life insurance policy provided temporary financial support. He attended primary school at Saint John’s elementary school. Between ages nine and twelve he spent three years in the hospital while a tumor in his neck was irradiated. Sir Ian Botham and the Ashes are as closely intertwined as willow and leather or Merv Hughes and his moustache. You simply cannot think of one without the other. In this book, Sir Ian takes you on a ride through a lifetime’s relationship with cricket’s oldest and most treasured prize, revealing just how it has shaped his life and how he has helped to turn it into the contest it is today. From the moment he first watched the likes of Ken Barrington stride to the wicket in jaw-jutting defiance to the day he flayed Australia’s bowling attack around Headingley as if playing with his mates in the park, and then onwards to his role in commentating on what was arguably the finest series of the lot in 2005, Sir Ian has a rich and varied connection with the Ashes, and he tells all here. The Ashes is a series that has provided incredible highs and heartbreaking lows for English and Australian fans alike over the past 35 years. Sir Ian has often been at the center of the roller-coaster ride. Whether it is the story of his days as England’s dogsbody in 1974 in Melbourne or the refusal to let Bob Willis bowl downwind until he was angry enough to skittle the Aussies in 1981, they are all revealed in depth in Botham’s Book of the Ashes.

College Success: Advice for Parents of High School and College Students

$23.89

All parents want their children to be successful in college. For most, success means that their children graduate from college with a good job or are accepted to Graduate School. This book is for parents who want to help their children achieve the success they desire in college and beyond. Clearly, there are paths that lead to those two goals, paths that are often unknown or unclear to parents and students alike. For that reason, the author describes and emphasizes the key factors that lead to college, employment and career success. Parents also receive much useful advice on how to help their children capitalize on their natural talents, find their stride and pursue their dreams. The early chapters quickly take readers through the years prior to college, so parents with children who are not yet in college can determine if they are ready and what they need. In fact, some students may benefit from taking a year off after high school. For parents with children about to enter college or already in college, the author has included the information, tools, techniques and suggestions that both parents and students need. Parents will learn how students can avoid the ugly side of college life, how students can select their major and career direction, the three areas in which students must excel, the universal success skills students should develop, the 18 myths that students believe, the importance of accomplishments, the value of preparation and much more. Most importantly, parents will learn to play an effective supporting role in student success. Each chapter of this book covers a topic that all college parents should understand and address. With the information provided, parents will have the ability to help their children chart a course that can significantly improve their chances for success, during and after college.

For most of us, mourning is something to be endured. We are often merely passive spectators of our own pain, and we see our grief period as a grim mountain that we must climb over. But for Maurice Lamm it can be much more. Bereavement, he says, can often be an enriching experience, even as it is a sorrowful and often tragic one. Our faith in a higher power can move us to not only live through the present but also to stride into the future with renewed energy and a revitalized outlook on life. In this, his sequel to the best-selling The Jewish Way in Death and Mourning, Rabbi Lamm helps mourners not just get through their grief, but also grow through it. He gently steers mourners on the path that allows their sorrow to teach them important lessons about life. And he shows consolers how to listen and speak with their hearts so that they can provide real comfort to others. His marvelous insights on the days of shiva, the year of kaddish, and the lovingkindness of others reveal the richness and true purpose of Jewish mourning rituals and customs. They prepare us to receive consolation and ready us for the journey that will take us beyond grief. His Words for a Loss When at a Loss for Words is treasury of readings for finding and giving comfort by transforming the spiritual ideas of an ancient faith into contemporary language. Here there are stories and fables that illuminate our complicated lives, meditations from the depths of human experience, and a gallery of unforgettable images that speak to our souls during times of loss. Rabbi Lamm’s words will help all who walk the path of grief to find their way to consolation–and then beyond, to an appreciation of the blessings andopportunities that present themselves to us when we confront loss. And they can even take us further, to discover the celebrated Jewish art of wringing blessing out of tragedy.

Booth Tarkington Booth Tarkington is the glass of adolescence and the mold of Indiana. The hero of his earliest novel, Harkless in The Gentleman from Indiana, drifts through that narrative with a melancholy stride because he has been seven long years out of college and has not yet set the prairie on fire. But Mr. Tarking- “. nt the time of writing distant from Princeton by i’r.; ij Su.t j’Miab1 r of ycnrn an’ also !’. .. ;,, co’d “it ; ul i.;i “.! f.i’.i:n !n a htr . “.i.. bs -!jii/s ai H ulie i.f li’i’ spi,’ ””. – County idolizes him, evil-doer ha him, ‘ ful old men worship him, devoted young men simdow his unsuspecting steps at night in order to protect him from the villains of Six-Cross-Roads, sweet girls adore him, fortune saves him from dire adventures, and in the end his fellow-voters choose him to represent their innumerable virtues in the Congress of their country without his even dreaming what affectionate game they are at. This from the creator of Penrod, who at the comical age of twelve so often lays large plans for proving to the heedless world that he, too, has been ahero all along! In somewhat happier hours Mr. Tarkington wrote Monsieur Beaucaire, that dainty romantic episode in the life of Prince Louis-Philippe de Valois, who masquerades as a barber and then as a gambler at Bath, is misjudged on the evidence of his own disguises, just escapes catastrophe, and in the end gracefully forgives the gentlemen and ladies who have been wrong, parting with anexquisite gesture from Lady Mary Carlisle, the beauty of Bath,, who loves him but who for a few fatal days had doubted. This from the creator of William Sylvanus Baxter, who at the preposterous age of seventeen imagines himself another Sydney Carton and after a silent, agonizing,

This collection of interviews captures the imagination of the writer widely regarded as “the granddaddy of science fiction.” However, Ray Bradbury considers Fahrenheit 451 to be his only science-fiction novel and his others, including The Martian Chronicles, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Illustrated Man, to be more fantasy and horror than science fiction. Bradbury, born in 1920, began reading voraciously quite early. He enjoyed the pulp magazine Amazing Stories when it first appeared. He came to maturity just before World War II, when Nazis were firing V-1 and V-2 rockets at Britain, and began writing fiction as the space age was coming to full stride. In addition to having a moon crater named in his honor, he has received science fiction’s Nebula Grandmaster Award for his lifetime achievements and in 2000 the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. “The writer’s vocabulary need not be extensive,” Bradbury says. “He shouldn’t throw unusual words at the reader, but I do believe in using the right word. The reader should be given something more than the basic meaning by the use of words that are dynamic and colorful, that provide pictures for the reader.” Since 1941, when Super Science Stories bought his first story, Bradbury has written and published hundreds of short stories, as well as novels, essays, dramas, operas, teleplays, poems, and screenplays. His film work in Ireland crafting the screenplay for John Huston’s Moby-Dick in 1954 established Bradbury as a fixture in Hollywood. Versions of his works have been shown on all the major networks, and USA Network produced sixty-five of his teleplays for The Ray Bradbury Theater. During his career Bradbury has given more than 300 interviews. The selection included in this volume begins in 1948, spans more than five decades, and charts Bradbury’s long creative life. A recent Ph.D.

Couples is a collection of thirty-seven black-and-white photographs, made by Abraham Menashe, that introduces its audience to relationships. The reader will encounter conventional and unconventional couples, depicting innocence, flirtation, romance, primal attraction, fear, sorrow, exhibitionism, uninhibited passion, devotion, and loyalty. The collection, made mostly in a public park, begins with a medley of teens celebrating their budding sexuality and ends with an elderly man belly-laughing with his paralyzed spouse; in-between we witness a variety of provoking partners. Menashe explores how pairs are “bound” to one another-how they sit with, lean on, hold onto, and embrace each other or, simply “fit” together, and he captures the life force that emanates from them. “Through relationships we face our heart-its rich and exhilarating grandeur, as well as its painful limitations-as it seeks to find its stride and beat with another. The photographs put a face on the hunger for connection, paying homage to partners, couples and coupling, and lovers and loving.”
